Sarah Ellis, Clinical Intern
Hi, I’m Sarah!
As a woman from the South now living in Brooklyn, I understand the unique pressures that come with navigating sexuality, identity, and relationships in a world that doesn’t always make space for them. This prompted a lifelong interest in these topics and a desire to help others with them, which brings me to this work. Starting my therapy career after nearly a decade of working as a journalist covering sex and dating, I have connected with folks across the gender and sexuality spectrum about their personal experiences regarding relationship challenges.
My passion lies in working with individuals and couples on issues related to sex and relationships, including navigating nonmonogamy, desire discrepancies, communication skills, and deconstructing purity culture or shame around sexuality. I am currently a student in NYU’s mental health counseling program, and have an understanding of CBT, mindfulness, relational therapy, psychodynamic counseling, and trauma-informed care. My skill set includes Sex Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples (EFT). My approach is feminist, person-centered, and rooted in a strengths-based approach, and I work from a foundationally sex- and kink-positive lens. No question is too “weird” or TMI for my sessions, as I believe that talking about sex can be deeply meaningful in a society that often makes it taboo.
Outside of therapy, I am an animal lover and a reality TV fanatic. I’m also an avid reader of fiction and nonfiction and will happily take your book recs. I identify as queer, which informs how I understand and think about sexuality on a full spectrum.
My practice is primarily virtual, with the option to meet in-person as schedules allow. I’m excited to meet you! Please reach out to schedule a phone consultation to see if we’re a good fit.
My Approach
Sarah takes a trauma-informed, psychodynamic approach to therapy, creating a warm and supportive space where clients feel truly heard. She focuses on the emotional undercurrents that shape our relationships with ourselves and others, helping clients explore deeper patterns and experiences that may be influencing their sense of self and intimacy. Sarah believes that healing happens through connection, curiosity, and compassion. She assists people in tapping into childhood and life experiences to better understand and restructure negative thoughts, feelings, and behavioral patterns.
Low Fee Sessions
Sarah is able to offer sessions at a low fee or sliding scale. Please reach out to learn more about session fees.
